| The Scout of the Year
Award was establish after the death of Troop 75's Eagle Scout Chip Vowell.
On January 1, 1976 at the age of 17, Chip was in a fatal automobile
accident. Chip was the oldest of three sons of Evelyn and Byron Vowell,
Scoutmaster of the troop at that time. Shortly after Chip's death, the Troop Committee of Troop 75, with the help of the Mullins Congregation establish the Chip Vowell Memorial Award to be used in memory of Chip to annually recognize the accomplishments of one scout from the troop. The Committee was successful in soliciting enough funds to establish an endowment fund to continue the award in perpetuity. Interest from the endowment fund is used to purchase the awards for the recipient. The recipient of the award receives an engraved loving cup designation him as the Scout of the Year and a $100 cash award. A plaque listing all the winners and a duplicate of the cup hangs on the wall outside the Mullins Fellowship Hall. Excess funds received at the time also enable the Troop Committee to purchase a gift, a portable sound system, for Mullins United Methodist as a memorial to Chip. The system was donated in 1976 and was used regularly in the Fellowship Hall for many years. |
